History

The Story of the Croatian Composers’ Society (HDS)

The story of the Croatian Composers’ Society (HDS) begins in the challenging times of 1945, when composers and musicians recognized the need to establish a collective organization to protect their interests and promote musical arts. On June 9, 1945, an inaugural assembly was held in the Small Hall of then Croatian State Conservatory, and composer Ivo Tijardović assumed the role of the Society’s first president. This event marked the formation of an institution that would play a key role in developing Croatian musical culture.

Early Days and First Steps

The first annual assembly of the Association of Composers of Croatia (UKH) at the end of 1945 gathered 50 members. Even then, key issues such as copyright protection and publishing were emphasized, and an initiative to celebrate the centenary of Vatroslav Lisinski’s opera Love and Malice was launched. In 1946, work began on drafting the Copyright Protection Act, underscoring the Society’s commitment to the legal protection of music creators.

Key Milestones and Expanded Activities

Over the decades, HDS experienced numerous milestones that shaped its current significance. The establishment of the Zagreb Music Biennale in 1961 marked a new era in promoting contemporary music. The Biennale, which continues today, has become an internationally recognized event, connecting the Croatian music scene with global trends. Similarly, the launch of Zagrebfest in 1953 laid the foundation for popular music, while the establishment of the Music Panel and Croatian Music Days in 1964 further emphasized the importance of preserving national musical creativity.

Role in Copyright Protection and Publishing

In 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence, HDS transformed into a modern citizens’ association, and the Copyright Protection Office (ZAMP) became an integral part of its professional services. The Society strongly advocated for developing a legal framework for copyright protection and strengthening ties with international copyright organizations.
In publishing, HDS has played a crucial role in promoting Croatian music, releasing hundreds of sheet music editions and CDs. The founding of the publishing and record company Cantus Ltd. in 2000 provided a professional platform for contemporary music.

Modern Era and International Recognition

In recent years, HDS has launched projects focused on promoting young talents and contemporary forms of musical art. Music awards such as Porin and Cesarica have become synonymous with recognizing excellence in music creation. In 2020, HDS launched the glazba.hr web portal, a central information source on the Croatian music scene, and in 2022, hosted the prestigious European Camille Award for film music.

A Look to the Future

Today, the Croatian Composers’ Society is a key institution in Croatian musical culture. Through its events, educational programs like Behind the Scenes, and a strong commitment to copyright protection, HDS remains a leading voice for Croatian music creators and a promoter of Croatia’s rich musical heritage at home and abroad.
